Before Box O Fun

Box O Fun didn’t just spring out of nowhere. Box O Fun founder, Layla Hashim started ceramics in 2016 at the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham after some experimentation at home. All of these pieces that are pictured here were made at home between 2016 and 2020. It’s not every piece that was ever made by Layla (there are too many boxes full of experimental pieces that have either never been fired or only ever part fired). Even then, not all the pieces have been photographed. Here is a selection of pieces that you may have viewed before on social media platforms, some have never been seen before.

Before ceramics, there was bead embroidery, work in wood and metal and plenty of textiles. Performing arts pieces are lost in the space of time.
